Hello world!
I celebrated a birthday this week. Between the anniversary-induced reflection and the transition from summer to fall, liminal was the perfect word for this week’s note. As summer fades into autumn, I’m learning to appreciate what fall has to offer. It’s a fairly short list since I’m early in the process but the things I truly love about the season between summer and winter are:
- the colors of the leaves as they change
- the Fall Spice Espresso Tonic at De Fer, my favorite Pittsburgh coffee shop
The image above is from my birthday morning bike ride on Montour Trail, just uphill of the McDonald Trestle. I spent the week of my birthday (re)connecting with family and close friends. I considered using lovely as the title for this week’s note as a result.

One of my bucket list items has been running the 5K at the airport. In previous years, injury or travel prevented me from participating. I am so glad I got to participate this year. The two mile fun run started six minutes after the 5K and the courses were shared. As a result, the latter portion of the 5K felt like a bit of a traffic jam as a result of the shared course and how frequently folks stopped to take the opportunity to photograph and record themselves on the tarmac.
There was also a “Touch-A-Truck” component to the 5K that featured airport snow removal machinery and equipment that local police departments seem to have acquired from the military: cool.
