Ahoy and welcome to LAST WEEK – my approach to week notes.

While week notes are not a new concept, I want to share a bit about my perspective. I have two goals in doing this:

  • I want to enable you to decide if LAST WEEK is likely to be right for you
  • Writing out the what and why of LAST WEEK will focus my efforts and help me to make decisions about what makes the cut

🌊 I am Brie Carranza. There’s plenty of information about me elsewhere on the Internet. For the purposes of LAST WEEK, here’s what I want you to know:

  • I am passionate about open source, free (like speech) software and democratizing access to technology. The tag cloud on my public bookmarks site is a good way to get a broader understanding of my interests.
  • I am nostalgic and homesick for “the old Internet” that I fell in love with before the doom of rampant advertising and the rise of walled gardens.
    • The rise of the indie Web and the fediverse inspire a measure of hope that all is not lost. I blog and maintain a range of Web sites because it brings me joy to do so. I know I am not alone in desiring to capture and renew the spirit of the old days as I welcome the goodness of the future.
  • I tend to be a positive and upbeat person. I can feel a sense of vulnerability when expressing positive sentiments. I hope that my openness will here will be met with kindness or silence so that I may write freely and openly.

🤔 WHAT? WHY?
#

Let’s talk about what kind of content I aim to post here and why. LAST WEEK is the place where I’ll share:

  • “Today I learned” notes
    • that includes things that were helpful to me or someone else – even if I did not literally learn them that day or week
  • a summary of whatever I have been building or hacking on lately
  • links to interesting stories and articles
    • with commentary, my questions and related readings
  • whatever else I would like
    • while you are very welcome here, it’s my Web site and I get to make the rules

The why behind LAST WEEK is a layered story. I will unpeel a layer or two here.

I wanted a centralized place to share things that I find interesting, thought-provoking or otherwise worthy of attention. The weekly publishing cadence represents me attempting to build on what has worked for me in the past.

I continue creating and publishing my own Web sites in an attempt to claim my little nook of the Internet. I do this both for myself and to inspire others who might be similarly inclined to do the same.

Catalyzing inspiration for SEMAPHORE came to be from SHELLSHARKS, from the notes Simon Willison has published on running a link blog and the vibes of the omg.lol community.
